Unlocking Your Potential – Improving your grade in every subject!
As an academy we consider pupils’ ability to cope with the numerical demands of everyday life and provide opportunities for pupils to develop their confidence and understanding of these essential Numeracy skills in all aspects of academy life, by encouraging pupils in all subjects to:
- handle number and measurement competently, mentally, orally and in writing;
- use calculators accurately and appropriately;
- interpret and use numerical and statistical data represented in a variety of forms.
Lawn Manor Academy is dedicated to raising the achievement of all pupils by seeking to develop their Numeracy skills by consistent and accurate application across the curriculum, through the use of the five Numeracy Locks. As an academy we have integrated Numeracy into all subjects, including Tutor time and made Numeracy not just a skill pupils use in their Mathematics lessons.
We have successfully embedded the Numeracy Locks throughout the academy and they are visible in every classroom for every pupil to see and use. The five Numeracy Locks cover the five key areas of Mathematics and make them accessible for all subjects at any level. The five areas are ‘Measures’, ‘Four Operations’, ‘Data’, ‘Ratio and Proportion’ and ‘Fractions, Decimals and Percentages’. The posters are strategically placed in every classroom, so teachers can refer to them regularly and pupils can use the Locks to scaffold their learning.
Pupils also have access to the Numeracy Flash Cards every lesson, which breakdown the five key areas of Mathematics. With the use of these resources, we are ensuring the teaching and learning of Numeracy is consistent across all subjects, which enables our pupils to raise their own attainment.
Numeracy is the ability to process, communicate and interpret numerical information in a variety of contexts. At Lawn Manor Academy, we have created a positive working environment where Numeracy is celebrated; pupils are encouraged to use Numeracy and are not scared to make mistakes. Intervention is provided through Numeracy classes at Key Stage Three, where pupils have the opportunity to recap the fundamental aspects of Numeracy in small class sizes. Numeracy classes use workbooks, board games, computer programmes, assessments and IPads to embed essential Numeracy skills required across all subjects. Pupils are supported in improving their Numeracy skills, which enables them to gain a deeper understanding and allows them to tackle calculations more confidently in all subjects.
Literacy allows us to explore our identity and our culture. It enables our students to become independent learners whilst at the same time empowering them. That’s why Lawn Manor Academy is fully committed in building a strong literacy community, developing the skills that all of our students need to support and aid them in their learning and life.
Across the Academy we encourage a consistent approach to the teaching of literacy using the highly visible ‘Keys to Success’ strategy across all subject areas, supporting students of all year groups and all abilities in their reading, writing and spoken language. Specifically, reading is the cornerstone of Lawn Manor literacy community. In creating the culture of a ‘Reading Academy’, every opportunity is used to encourage students to read and enjoy books across all subjects and in tutor time.
In years 7 and 8, students participate in the Accelerated Reader program, a computer based program that helps teachers and parents monitor children’s independent reading practice. Our year 9 students take on the role of reading mentors, working with selected year 7 and 8 students in a mutually beneficial relationship that supports and builds both confident readers and listeners. This strong reading culture and commitment to literacy is supported by a well-resourced and active Learning Resource Centre.
